Lots of books this week!

Many thanks are due to The Miss Rumphius Effect for the post about this year’s AAAS Science Books & Films award finalists. We’re reading Steve Jenkins books this week, and it was exciting to learn that Jenkins’ newest book, Bones, is a finalist!
(Can I also insert here what a dangerous, dangerous place Amazon.com is? When I linked to Bones it made a suggestion that I purchase three picture books I’ve been lusting after for quite some time…)
You can peek at a preview of the book here.

There are quite a few amazing children’s book illustrators who use cut paper. We’re studying Steve Jenkins this week, but David Wisniewski, Eric Carle, and Leo Leonni also come to mind.
You need to take a look at this Star Wars paper animation (thanks to CRAFT for the link!)

I can’t remember if I’ve posted these here before, but here are the tutorial videos I mentioned to staff members a while ago. If you have any further questions or other suggestions for helpful videos, let me know!

What do you think, ladies and gentlemen?
I’ve heard some teachers find it unusual that we have a chapter book read aloud for 2nd graders at the beginning of the year, but I’ve taught using picture books all the way up to 5th grade. We usually read 2-4 picture books throughout the week as a class, in addition to the picture books we enjoy at library and library checkout.
I was reading Charlotte’s Web in first grade, but I also adored Jane and the Dragon and all the Lane Smith / Jon Scieszka books too… I agree that in many respects, some picture books are more complex than chapter books.
